Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace

Course overview

This national continuing-education course prepares healthcare professionals to recognize and respond to workplace conditions that may compromise safe, competent, or reliable performance. The course uses a functional fitness-for-duty approach rather than assuming that a diagnosis, disability, prescribed medication, mental-health treatment, or recovery history establishes impairment. Learners examine fatigue, work stress, substance use, medication effects, drug diversion, acute and chronic health conditions, observable performance concerns, immediate safety response, objective documentation, reporting pathways, disability accommodation, professional monitoring, and return-to-work planning. The course emphasizes patient safety, respectful communication, privacy, due process, nonretaliation, and compassionate accountability.
