Course overview
The prevalence of hypertension in the United States has increased significantly, according to the 2025 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines for blood pressure, which use the Eighth Joint National Committee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. Primary hypertension is more common than secondary hypertension. While the cause of primary hypertension is not known, a correlation exists between primary hypertension and certain genetic, age-related, and lifestyle risk factors. Hypertensive emergencies and isolated diastolic and systolic hypertension, and their treatments are discussed.
