Course overview

Course Description: This course introduces the Cohesive Model of Supervision (CMS), an empirically based, data-driven framework developed from three concept mapping studies with 39 expert academic and site supervisors in counseling and counseling psychology. The course reviews the five interrelated areas of CMS: assessment of the supervisees professional performance and personal functioning; the supervisory relationship as both an assessment and intervention tool; conceptualization and implementation of supervision sessions and interventions; the supervisors own professional and personal self-assessment and reflection; and administrative and logistical considerations of supervision. Participants will examine the concept mapping methodology used to construct the model, its alignment with existing supervision competencies and best practices (including ACES and APA guidelines), and its practical application across the supervisory relationship. The course also addresses limitations of the current evidence base, including sample diversity, and identifies directions for future research and practice. This course on the Cohesive Model of Supervision is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of empirically based clinical supervision practices. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal. Authors: Kemer Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about the Cohesive Model of Supervision. Specifically, the practitioner will: 1. Describe the five main areas of the Cohesive Model of Supervision (CMS) and their function within the supervisory process. 2. Identify the concept mapping methodology and empirical research foundations used to develop the CMS. 3. Apply CMS clusters and subclusters to specific supervisory practices, including relationship-building, conceptualization and intervention, self-reflection, and administrative responsibilities.
