Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the description for the physiological causes, symptoms and complications resulting from acid reflux. While acid reflux is only a mild annoyance for many people, it can cause severe pain and medical complications for millions of people. Heartburn is estimated to effect more that 60 million Americans at least once each month and as many as 15 million individuals on a daily basis. This course will examine the causes of GERD as well the medical complications that result from acid reflux. This course will also review the various recommendations to reduce or cure GERD including lifestyle modifications, medications and surgical therapies. Included will be a section on the possible dental complications caused by GERD.
