HEALTHCARE RISK MANAGEMENT ONLINE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM (120 HOURS)

Course overview

The course continues to have 13 Units of instruction developed and taught by risk managers and other experts in the field. Each unit is summarized in the on-line text and supplemented with assigned reading from the web links to Florida statutes, regulatory agencies and other national, state and professional risk management materials. As quality assurance checks we have the following requirements: - Each unit contains an application exercise with instructor feedback, and self-study test to prepare students for the final exam. - We require students to complete adverse incident reports and practice risk management skills throughout the units. - In our first and last units we also request students to assess their own risk management skill set. The final assessment compares growth at the end with baseline skills. This helps learners to identify areas that remain important areas for personal development and continued professional growth as well as confirms the skills that have been acquired during the program. - As part of the final exam, a case study is required. Learners must apply and integrate the risk management process and principles to a set of facts from actual risk management cases. We have three cases that are randomly assigned to students. Students must certify that they have completed the case study independently and on their own. The random assignment of cases helps keep our course material current and requires students to apply risk management principles to any series of facts. - Finally, our course requires ten hours of student participation in chat sessions. Chat sessions are conducted weekly by instructors who are nationally recognized leaders in the field of risk management. Students have the opportunity to post questions prior to the session and can access the recorded sessions at a later date. Students who are absolutely unable to participate because of work schedules or because they live in a different time zone are allowed to listen to recorded lectures and answer questions based on the lectures. - The final exam is multiple choice and true/false. The student will be allowed 3 hours to complete the exam and must receive a test score of at least 70% to receive credit. The curriculum meets the AHCA requirements outlined in 59A-10.037 of: - 40 hours related to general risk management administration and departmental organization and management - 32 hours related to applicable federal, state and local health and safety laws and rules, community interrelationships, and accident prevention and - 40 hours related to applicable standards of health care risk management, including principles of malpractice insurance, the conduct of malpractice litigation, and the settlement of malpractice claims
