Communication with Cognitively Impaired Clients

Course overview

This 3 hour continuing education course provides Certified Nursing Assistants and other healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and practical communication strategies for working with clients who have cognitive impairment. The course addresses common communication challenges associated with dementia, Alzheimer disease, memory loss, confusion, and other cognitive changes that may affect a client ability to understand, process, or express information. Participants will review communication techniques including approaching the client respectfully, using clear and simple language, allowing adequate response time, recognizing verbal and nonverbal cues, active listening, validation, reassurance, redirection, and maintaining dignity during care. The course also examines behaviors that may communicate unmet needs, discomfort, fear, frustration, or environmental stress. Emphasis is placed on adapting communication to the individual, avoiding confrontation and unnecessary correction, supporting independence, maintaining privacy and respect, promoting safety, and communicating effectively with families and members of the healthcare team. Practical healthcare scenarios reinforce appropriate responses to confusion, repetitive questions, resistance to care, agitation, and difficulty expressing needs. Upon completion, participants will be better prepared to communicate safely, respectfully, and compassionately with cognitively impaired clients and to use individualized approaches that support dignity, comfort, participation in care, and quality of life.
