Course overview

This course focuses on clinical decision-making for combining aquatic and land-based rehabilitation within a coordinated plan of care. Participants will examine how the properties and demands of each environment can be used strategically to support progression, manage treatment intensity, improve activity tolerance, and promote carryover into functional tasks. Emphasis will be placed on selecting the most appropriate environment for a given therapeutic goal, transitioning activities between water and land, and developing hybrid treatment approaches that maintain continuity while advancing patient function and safety.Rather than viewing aquatic and land-based therapy as separate treatment tracks, the course presents them as complementary environments that can be sequenced according to what the patient needs to accomplish next. Practical examples will illustrate how an activity may be introduced, practiced, progressed, or challenged differently in water and on land, and how clinicians can deliberately build the bridge from improved performance in the pool to meaningful function outside of it. This course is designed for an interprofessional audience.
