Course overview

In this activity, we look at the roles that delays and misdiagnoses play in litigated cases involving ALI and examine the common themes associated with the delayed or missed diagnosis and/or treatment of ALI. After completing this activity, learners should be able to: apply guidelines for documentation of the risk factors, history, and assessment for patients with suspected ALI in order to avoid the failure to diagnose ALI and demonstrate the high quality of care provided; differentiate the clinical features of ALI from the clinical presentation of conditions that mimic ALI; and integrate awareness of the reasons for the failure to diagnose and treat ALI into clinical practice in order to improve patient safety, improve documentation and decrease the risk of exposure to medical malpractice.
