Course overview

This course examines the role of atrial fibrillation as a major risk factor for the potentially devastating neurological diagnosis of stroke. The inadequate treatment of patients with AF is a major patient safety issue responsible for thousands of preventable strokes annually. Several cases are used to illustrate the spectrum of medical errors and litigation related to atrial fibrillation and stroke. Based on the current state of the literature, recommendations are provided for reducing medical errors, maintaining patient safety, and avoiding litigation in this critical area.
