Course overview
The neonate often presents a significant diagnostic challenge. TSG believes that this patient group deserves special attention in the risk and safety curriculum. There is probably no medical condition more frightening to a physician than a neonate in distress or exhibiting an acute problem. Whether this is encountered in an Emergency Department (ED), an office, or clinic setting, the practitioner must act quickly and decisively too avert a potential untoward outcome. A physician¿s usual evaluation routine for a patient may be limited by the baby¿s size and the young parent¿s inability to convey exact historical details. Obtaining laboratory and imaging data may be difficult if the hospital or clinic staff is not familiar with neonates. All of these reasons add up to a potential delay or failure to make a critical diagnosis.
