Course overview

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the psychopharmacology of antipsychotic medications. Nurses have an important responsibility in caring for patients receiving psychopharmacologic medications. This course will provide the learner with essential information on antipsychotic medications. Simplified neurophysiology is discussed in order to explain the actions of the drugs, the most common side effects, and the most serious untoward reactions. Nursing assessments and interventions are highlighted. Patient teaching is an integral part of the course, as are approaches to encourage drug compliance.
