Course overview
The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the psychopharmacology of antipsychotic medications. Nurses have an important responsibility in caring for patients receiving psychopharmacologic medications. This course will provide the learner with essential information on antipsychotic medications. Simplified neurophysiology is discussed in order to explain the actions of the drugs, the most common side effects, and the most serious untoward reactions. Nursing assessments and interventions are highlighted. Patient teaching is an integral part of the course, as are approaches to encourage drug compliance. Course Objectives ¿Identify the major dopamine pathways. ¿Describe how blockade of the dopamine pathways by medications relates to desired effects and adverse effects. ¿Identify signs of serious side effects that must be reported. ¿Discuss atypical antipsychotics and special precautions that patients need to take. ¿Recognize nursing interventions for common side effects.
