Course overview

The World Health Organization and the Institutes of Medicine have long expressed the critical importance of teamwork between healthcare disciplines. There is increasing incentive for healthcare organizations to measure and report quality patient outcomes. Collaborative practices have been shown empirically to result in reduced medical complications, mortality, length of stay, healthcare costs and increased provider role fulfillment; however, interprofessional (IP) practice continues to be a challenge to implement. Educating disciplines together can facilitate IP practice but can be challenging to balance cost and discipline-specific educational requirements. Identified gaps: Failure to use IP practice routinely; lack of understanding by healthcare professionals regarding the role IP practice can play in meeting required quality measures; and CE consumer need to evaluate activities for ability to help implement IP in their practice.
