Healthcare professionals often work with clients suffering from traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents or dementia. These conditions are often accompanied by confabulation, which may interfere with obtaining clients¿ cooperation for nursing care and rehabilitation. Recent studies suggest that some traditional approaches for reducing confabulation, such as teaching clients to double-check the accuracy of their memories, may be ineffective or even counterproductive. It may be helpful to diminish the attention that some clients with brain injuries are able to devote to their confabulatory recollections. Healthcare providers must understand alternative approaches.
