SELECTIVE SEROTONIN RE-UPTAKE INHIBITORS

Course overview

Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) are anti-depressants that are FDA-approved to treat many psychiatric disorders, but their primary use is for treating people who have major depression. They are effective for many people and have a good safety profile. However, SSRIs do have side effects and can cause adverse effects. To administer these drugs safely, nurses must know their risks, benefits, and how they work. After completing Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors participants will be able to identify and explain the mechanism of action of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI); identify significant side effects of SSRIs; and identify significant adverse effects of SSRIs.
