Course overview

CBE (also referred to as variance charting) is a shorthand method of documentation that primarily uses flow sheets in checklist format for documenting patient information, and limits the narrative writing of patient information to exceptions or variances from what is accepted within the facility as standard, normal (i.e., ¿within normal limits¿ [WNL]), and usual. CBE was developed administratively in an attempt to diminish redundancy in written patient information, increase the time available for the nurse to provide patient care, decrease charting errors of omission, and reduce nursing time spent writing long narrative notes that contain repetitive, unchanging patient information during each shift. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of CBE including the intended outcomes for use of CBE, advantages and disadvantages of CBE, and how to perform CBE. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
