Discharge against medical advice (DAMA) refers to a situation in which a patient leaves a healthcare facility by choice when doing so is not recommended by the treating clinician. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of managing discharge of a patient from the psychiatric unit AMA, including information on the reasons why a patient decides to be discharged against medical advice, nursing responsibility when managing DAMA, and documentation requirements for this situation. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
