Course overview

Culturally competent (CC) care of Filipino patients during labor and delivery is holistic and incorporates cultural beliefs, attitudes, and traditions when planning and providing care. Providing CC care to the Filipino woman during labor and delivery can involve using an interpreter, arranging for female clinicians, educating about and encouraging feeding colostrum as the baby¿s first food during the first few days of his/her life, and accommodating the presence of many family members before and after the baby¿s birth. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of providing CC care to Filipino patients during labor and delivery, including the impact of cultural factors on health care practices and beliefs related to labor and delivery, and to aid in caring for the Filipino patient during childbirth. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
