PARENT/FAMILY TEACHING: CHILDREN UNDERGOING EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION

Course overview

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-support procedure used to overcome severe, potentially reversible respiratory failure in infants and children. Blood is withdrawn from the venous circulation into tubing connected to a pump; the blood then exits the pump into a membrane oxygenator where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygenation occurs. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of providing parent/family education about children undergoing ECMO, including a step-by-step process and the benefits of parent education on this topic. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
