BARIATRIC PATIENTS: REPOSITIONING IN CHAIR

Course overview

Repositioning a bariatric patient (i.e., a patient with clinically severe obesity, which was previously commonly referred to as morbid obesity) in a chair or wheelchair involves changing the body position within the same area of the chair (e.g., from side to side by shifting weight to a different area of the body) or moving the patient to an area of greater support (e.g., realign the patient in the seat of the chair). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of repositioning a bariatric patient in a chair, including the use of assistive equipment, factors that must be considered when repositioning a bariatric patient, and methods for ensuring the safety of both patient and healthcare provider during patient repositioning. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
