Course overview

Among the most important leadership skills is the ability to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals. The two main leadership styles employed in health care are transactional leadership and transformational leadership; of these, transformational leadership is more effective in motivating employees and improving job satisfaction. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of leadership and motivation, including information on the benefits of effective leadership skills, the two main leadership styles employed in health care, and how these leadership styles can be used to motivate staff nurses. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
