Course overview

This course focuses on educating healthcare professionals (i.e. SLP/SLPAs, OT/COTAs, PT/PTAs, NSG) about how to prevent the transmission of HIV and to encourage people to respond in informed ways to people living with HIV and AIDS. This course also guides participants with plans of action in healthcare environments in the event of a potential transmission during ADLs, Dysphagia and wound-care treatments. Ethical and legal guidelines in the healthcare environment are also discussed. Medical research and effective health education practice form the basis for this course. A pre-test serves as a measure of knowledge gained by the participants at the end of the course. Participants are often amazed at the latest beneficial information that directly impacts their interaction with patients and co-workers. Most notable - Post Exposure Prophylaxis. Participants will gain and understanding of facts and myths related to HIV/AIDS, how the virus is transmitted and not transmitted, risks of transmission through needle mediums, prevention, and response to potential infections and to those with the virus or AIDS.
