Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States. While awareness among nurses has increased in recent years, there still exists a need for continued education that will lead to prevention, earlier detection, and better treatment outcomes of heart disease in women. Women are five-times more likely to die from a heart attack than from breast cancer. Furthermore, research indicates that more women than men die from cardiovascular disease each year. This course aims to provide healthcare professionals with important information about the incidence of heart disease in women, its etiology and risk factors. Healthy lifestyle choices are essential to the prevention of heart disease, and topics related to diet, exercise, weight control, and smoking cessation and the latest diagnosis and treatment of heart disease is discussed. Objectives 1.Identify the role of heart disease as a cause of death in women. 2.Identify the disparity between heart care in men and women. 3.Categorize normal and abnormal blood cholesterol profiles. 4.Classify risk stratification of heart disease. 5.Explain the role of hormones in heart disease. 6.Explain the benefit of health prevention of heart disease. 7.Describe psychological factors that influence heart disease. 8.Explain the standard medical and surgical treatments for heart disease.
