SHARPS INJURIES: PREVENTION -- USING SAFETY DEVICES

Course overview

Sharps injuries (i.e., injuries incurred from any instrument or object that is capable of penetrating the skin, including needles, pins, fine forceps, scalpel blades, lancets, trocars, razor blades, and broken glassware) are the most serious form of exposure injuries in healthcare settings because they can result in the transmission of virulent, potentially life-threatening bloodborne pathogens (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus [HIV], hepatitis B virus [HBV], hepatitis C virus [HCV]). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the use of engineered safety devices to prevent sharps injuries. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
