Course overview

Cognitive dysfunction after acquired brain injury can cover a wide spectrum of deficits and severity levels. As a result, comprehensive and effective treatment of cognition can be challenging. In order to provide optimal care and promote functional cognitive improvements, clinicians must have the analytical skills to determine the best evidence-based interventions to use for their clients with neurological injuries. In addition, it is important for clinicians to have knowledge of treatment strategies and how to best train patients to use compensatory strategies to maximize their cognitive functioning. In this presentation, specific interventions for the following deficits will be discussed: Attention/ processing speed Memory/ learning Thought organization Problem solving/reasoning Executive function Interactive examples and case studies will be provided. New potential treatments for cognition that are currently being researched will also be reviewed.
