Course overview

Osteoporosis affects over 50 million Americans (55 percent of the people over the age of 50). It is often a silent disease until a fracture occurs. These fractures place a huge burden on our aging patients and the healthcare system. It is estimated that the annual cost for the treatment of osteoporosis will reach $25.3 billion in 2025 and $50 billion in 2040. However, most patients do not know how to prevent, diagnose, or treat Osteoporosis because many healthcare professionals never discuss Osteoporosis with their patients. Therefore, therapists are in a unique position to provide vital education/information to our patients and make referrals for further testing when appropriate. This course discusses the impact, incidence, and prevalence of Osteoporosis. It also examines risk factors, diagnostic techniques, and medical treatment. A strong focus is placed on prevention. Current literature related to Osteoporosis and therapy interviews are reviewed and, most importantly, appropriate therapy examination & treatment are thoroughly discussed along with ideas for implementation in the clinic.
