Course overview

The purpose of this course is to explain smoking cessation for the healthcare professional and to outline evidence-based treatment guidelines for individuals who smoke. This course will present the prevalence of smoking of combustible tobacco and use of smokeless tobacco products, as well as the pathophysiology of nicotine addiction and the health risks of tobacco use and tobacco exposure. The effects of nicotine on human physiology and the implications of nicotine dependency and withdrawal will be examined. Techniques for tobacco use intervention will be described in detail, including the pharmacotherapy used in tobacco cessation both for the smoking of combustible tobacco and the use of smokeless tobacco. In addition, challenges for individuals trying to quit smoking will be discussed.
