HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS: DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT ISSUES, AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERVENTION

Course overview

According to data released in 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 out of every 88 children is diagnosed with a disorder on the autism spectrum. This intermediate-level course will provide occupational therapy practitioners with information on the new criteria and classification system for autism spectrum disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, along with information on how occupational therapists can contribute to an informed diagnosis. Appropriate assessments and treatment strategies will be described that are intended to meet the needs of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder, their families, and others who work and interact with them. Course Objectives: - Recognize the history and prevalence of autism spectrum disorders. - Describe the causal theories for autism spectrum disorders. - Identify diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders. - Identify the specific strengths and challenges for individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders. - Describe the occupational therapy evaluation and assessment of high-functioning autism spectrum disorders. - Select appropriate evidence-based interventions and strategies to address occupational performance difficulties for individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.
