Course overview
Learner Objectives: As a result of having attended the meeting, the participants should have had the opportunity to: ¿ Understand factors that influence the exchange of inert gas, most commonly N2, in the tissues. ¿ The risk of decompression sickness (DCS) during diving, which is influenced by uptake of N2 or any other inert gas used to serve as an oxygen diluent during bottom time and the early phase of decompression and elimination during and after decompression. ¿ Understand the effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in skeletal muscle of rats submitted to total acute left hindlimb ischemia. Subject Matter: To provide a forum for professional scientific growth and development of the participants. To accomplish the aforementioned, the journal-based activity is designed to meet the following additional goals: To provide an opportunity for participants to: ¿ Through self-study, read UHM Journal papers in which ideas and data are presented pertaining to currently accepted uses of hyperbaric oxygen and diving medicine; ¿ Read peer-reviewed, evidence-based papers pertaining to the critique of current decompression schedules and/or the development of safer decompression schedules; ¿ Read peer-reviewed, evidence-based papers pertaining to the physiology and pathophysiology of compression and decompression phenomena; ¿ Read peer-reviewed, evidence-based papers pertaining to the physiologic, pharmacologic, pathologic, and biochemical effects of respirable gases with special emphasis on oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and the inert gases, especially in the hyperbaric environment, on different levels of biological organization; Teaching Methods: ¿ Journal Reading ¿ Examination of material ¿ Evaluation of activity Evaluation Methods: Evaluation is offered through the online educational portal with 3 graded questions each UHM Journal paper and an overall evaluation at completion of the Journal-based activity.
