In analyzing how pulmonary function affects the assessment of the respiratory system, the same principles hold true for the elderly as in other system assessments. The practitioner needs to remember to take their time and not rush the individual. Also, little things like maintaining warmth while being examined can make a difference in a person's ability to listen and follow directions. Initial appearances may obscure the subtle symptoms. Multiple systems work both in a synergistic and antagonistic manner under the most normal of circumstances; in the elderly, the changes that take place are gradual and place the individual at a higher risk for diseases that might not be prevalent among younger age groups.
