Course overview
John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman cofounded The Gottman Institute and cocreated the couples workshop, The Art and Science of Love. They are world-renowned for their work on marital stability and divorce prediction and have authored more than 41 books. Famous for 42 years of pioneering and award-winning research on marriage, John Gottman has revolutionized the way therapists think about couples with his ability to predict the long-term success of marriages given small cues in the way spouses interact with each other from their earliest days together. For nearly two decades, he and his wife Julie, have brought the tough-minded discipline of science to the notoriously messy, ambiguities and unsupported theories of couples therapy¿often with surprisingly optimistic results. John¿s the author of 190 published academic articles and author or coauthor of 41 books, including The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work; What Makes Love Last; The Relationship Cure; Why Marriages Succeed or Fail; and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, among many others. Together the Gottmans are the cofounders of The Gottman Institute. Julie is the author or coauthor of Ten Lessons to Transform Your Marriage; And Baby Makes Three; and The Marriage Clinic Casebook. As they¿ll demonstrate, their discoveries highlight how happy marriages come in many different styles¿but not necessarily in accord with popular, or even clinical, preconceptions of what they should be. The Gottmans will separate myth from reality in our ideas about what works in developing their craft of couples therapists. This workshop will present a comprehensive review of the science of what predicts whether relationships will succeed or fail as well as research-based interventions to transform disasters into healthy relationships. We¿ll also go beyond interventions to explore the inner world of the couples therapist, including the fears and frustrations every couples therapist faces. We¿ll focus on how to stay calm in the midst of couples¿ stormy conflicts, how to have hope when couples are hopeless, and adjust when couples¿ beliefs or values are at odds with our own. Bonus: The New Rules of Love and Commitment with Esther Perel, MA, LMFT Her groundbreaking first book, Mating in Captivity, introduced Americans to the inherent conflict in even the most successful marriages in which partners love each other very much but have sexual relationships that are dull and devoid of eroticism. Ever since, couples therapist Esther Perel has been recognized as one of the world¿s most original and insightful thinkers about couples, sexuality, and the peculiar paradoxes besetting modern marriage in the Western world. A native Belgian, fluent in nine languages, and a penetrating observer of the social and cultural patterns shaping our relationships, she¿s a practicing psychotherapist and organizational consultant to Fortune 500 companies, as well as an eloquent and wildly popular speaker. Her 2013 TED talk, ¿The Secret to Desire in a Long-Term Relationship,¿ began with what she called the million dollar question: ¿Can we want what we already have?¿. Her talk attracted more than a million hits in the first month after its release. Perel will bring her rare gift for speaking the unspoken-articulating the hidden psychological states most people can¿t yet put into words-to her talk about the complicated and contradictory needs that are shaping marriage and commitment today.
