This continuing education program outlines regulations and guidelines for maintaining privacy, confidentiality, and security of health information as required by law. Case scenarios demonstrate recent HIPAA violations, and for most of these occurrences, penalties and or fines were applied. Lessons learned from these cases emphasize HIPAA implications for clinicians, nurse managers and executives, nursing faculty, clinical educators, and nurse researchers. Internal and external reporting mechanisms for suspected violations will be addressed, including how to file a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR).
