In this course you will learn about the differences between suffering and pain. Pain management is a specialty that has unique terms. These terms provide the foundation and guide to determine why this is a unique specialty within the health care profession. Epidemiology is an important aspect of health care as a whole. Epidemiologic figures historically have facilitated the development of programs (e.g. eliminating certain diseases in the world; reducing perinatal mortality; studying groups at risk for heart disease, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and cancer. Nurses stand on the forefront of a new domain of pain management. Inadequate management of pain creates a financial burden on the health care system and society. It is estimated that greater than 50 million Americans suffer from some form of pain. It is also recognized widely that pain managed effectively in the postoperative period can promote positive outcomes.
