Course overview

This course focuses on medication-assisted approaches currently utilized in the treatment of alcohol and opioid use disorders. Topics covered include a brief history of medication-assisted treatment in the United States, the pharmacology of medications used to treat alcohol and opioid addiction, treatment guidelines and protocols, side effects and contraindications, and the use of medication-assisted treatment with special populations and during pregnancy. Medications covered include the use of acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone and extended-release injectable naltrexone in the treatment of alcohol use disorders, and the use of buprenorphine, naltrexone and methadone in the treatment of opioid addiction.
