Course overview

This home study course consists of how to: 1. Understand a prescription label. 2. Provide assistance with oral medication. 3. Provide assistance with topical forms of medication, including ophthalmic, otic and nasal forms. 4. Measure liquid medications, break scored tablets and crush tablets as directed by prescription order. 5. Understand what ¿assistance¿ with medication includes and does not include, and recognize a medication order that requires judgment and advise the resident, resident¿s health care provider or facility employer of the unlicensed caregiver¿s inability to assist in the administration of such orders. 6. Recognize the need to seek clarification for ¿as needed¿ prescription orders. 7. Develop an understanding of the types of questions to ask a health care provider regarding a resident¿s medications. 8. Complete a medication observation record. 9. Recognize the general side effects to medication classes and the need to report adverse reactions. 10. Understand the issues related to residents¿ right to privacy and providing for residents¿ safety related to medications. 11. Understand the requirements which must be met when residents keep medications in their rooms. 12. Retrieve and store medication.
