Course overview

There are more than 2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States today, as well as the 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer to be diagnosed this year. It is important to understand the cognitive, psychological as well as physical issues faced by breast cancer survivors. These issues include pain, loss of range of motion, chemo- brain, lymphedema, weight gain, and sarcopenia. Learn how Pilates based exercise can address many of these issues through it's emphasis upon deep breathing, scapula stabilization, activation of the core, and proper alignment. This course focuses on using Pilates exercises in breast cancer rehabilitation. Participants are instructed on the effects that radiation has on the rehab process and the side effects of systemic treatment. Participants explore the ways that breast cancer affects survivors cognitively and emotionally and are instructed on effective rehabilitation goals for post breast cancer treatment.
