Clinicians often encounter patients whose level of pain level responds poorly or not at all to treatment. Patients may suffer from wounds that refuse to heal, or post-surgical swelling that does not abate with traditional therapies such as electrical, ice or massage. Other patients may be unable to tolerate traditional therapies due to autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia. In these cases, manual lymphatic therapy can help relieve pain, significantly reduce or eliminate swelling and generally improve patient outcomes, with results that are significant and often achieved quickly. This course introduces the clinician to the basic uses of manual lymphatic therapy. Attendees are instructed on the anatomy of the lymphatic system and the components of lymph fluid. The course covers indications and contraindications for Integrated Manual Lymphatic Therapy, differentiation between primary and secondary lymphedema and explain the stages of lymphedema. It will conclude with instructions on common supplies used to treat lymphedema.
