Course overview

LEARNER OBJECTIVES: As a result of having attended the meeting, the participants should have had the opportunity to: LAPD Underwater Dive Unit 1.Recognize hazardous diving materials 2.Understand the training requirements of underwater divers and what the training entails 3.Learn about La Brea Tar Pits the LAPD Underwater Dive Unit conducting an investigation for evidence used in a high profile murder investigation. The evidence was discarded in the La Brea Tar Pits. Diver Fatalities: Lessons Learned 1.Understand the concept of risk and risky behavior in various types of recreational diving in order to learn how to mitigate risk and reduce the likelihood of a diving accident. 2.Understand the importance of developing and implementing a culture of diving safety in order to reduce risks in recreational scuba diving. 3.Understand the most common triggering events in recreational diver fatalities in order to reduce the likelihood of a dive turning into a fatality. Fitness to Dive and Diving Cases 1.To discuss fitness to dive qualifications in commercial divers as it relates to seizures. 2.To review the fitness to dive criteria regarding hearing loss. Stresses in Diving: Physical, Physiological & Psychological 1.Appreciate the physical, physiological and psychological stresses of diving 2.Recognize the stresses in diving that are ever-present 3.Become familiar the phases of a SCUBA dive 4.Learn which disorders are likely to occur during each phase of a dive 5.
