LEARNER OBJECTIVES: As a result of having attended the meeting, the participants should have had the opportunity to: Top 10 Maintenance Issues: A hyperbaric facility is composed of a variety of electrical and mechanical systems. The components of these systems go beyond the hyperbaric chamber. The manager/safety director of a hyperbaric facility should take responsibility for the maintenance program of the facility. This involves understanding what components are/are not maintained by the chamber manufacturer and other vendors, and making sure someone is maintaining all system components. Objectives: 1.Describe the scope of a hyperbaric facility maintenance program. 2.Identify components typically maintained by the chamber manufacturer. 3.Identify commonly neglected maintenance issues. NFPA Update: The 2015 edition of NFPA 99 is available to the public. Although it will take some time for various jurisdictions to adopt the new code, it is important to be aware of the safety guidance offered within. Changes including specifications for chamber interior paint, chamber garments, upholstered chamber furniture, and chamber mattresses. Objectives: 1.Identify new requirements in the 2015 edition of NFPA 99. 2.Identify changes to the requirements from the previous edition of NFPA 99. 3.Identify useful information in Annex A and Annex B of NFPA 99. Hyperbaric Safety: Role of the Medical Director 1.Understand the duty to protect patients is a broad mandate and includes a public safety role. 2.Recognize the importance of policies, procedures, and written exceptions as primary tools for patient safety. 3.Understand the hyperbaric ramifications of implantable devices. 4.Use the ¿Swiss Cheese¿ model of patient safety to analyze hyperbaric incidents. Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation Update This presentation will describe the history of the UHMS Clinical Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation and explore the impact that accreditation has had on the US hyperbaric medicine community. Additionally, it will focus on what have been significant recommendations for improvement from recent surveys. Objectives: 1. The attendee should appreciate the significance of achieving ISO 9001-2008 certification. 2. The attendee should understand the most recommendations for improvement such as currency of CME/CEU, the importance of formal introductory training for clinical staff and board certification. The Role of the Safety Director This presentation will describe how to implement the responsibilities and authority of the Safety Director as defined in NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Examples of improvement opportunities that have been identified in the UHMS Clinical Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation Program will be provided. Objectives: 1. The attendee should understand what is expected of the hyperbaric Safety Director to better insure a successful UHMS accreditation survey. 2. The attendee should know hyperbaric safety director should seek additional training in hyperbaric safety related courses beyond what is introduced in initial hyperbaric medicine training.
