Course overview

To be maximally effective in reducing the use of controlled substances by unauthorized users, healthcare providers must have a thorough understanding of both the regulatory frameworks surrounding controlled substances and an appreciation for the current acceptable medical practices for prescribing controlled substances in clinical situations. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will master the following objectives: 1.Describe the scope of current substance use and abuse in the United States. 2.Explain the purpose and role of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) as it relates to clinical practice. 3.Explain the similarities and differences between the five U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) schedules for controlled substances. 4.Explain the differences in prescribing requirements in Schedule II?V drugs. 5.Discuss the difference between drug misuse, abuse, and dependence 6.Explain how to recognize high-risk patients. 7.Describe the eight key steps generally recommended for the responsible prescribing of controlled substances. 8.Explain three educational areas that patients who are prescribed controlled substances should be taught.
