SCARS AND LYMPHATICS: A PRIMER FOR BODY WORK

Course overview

In the developed world alone, a total of 100 million people develop scars each year as a result of 55 million elective operations and 25 million operations after trauma. Current statistics estimate that over 50% of postsurgical patients will experience scar-related complications. 51.4 million surgeries are performed in the US alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The delivery of safe and effective scar tissue management requires an understanding of the structure and function of the organs and systems we are working with and of the wound-healing process. Utilizing the information that is currently available, the aim of this course is to provide a solid understanding of the lymphatic system and the role in creating a favorable environment for wound healing and healthy scar formation and the consequences associated with impaired lymphatic function. All participants will take away a basic knowledge of the lymphatic system and techniques and of scar formation and techniques best suited for long-term recovery. The latest research on the lymphatic system and scar management will be weaved throughout the class with anecdotal applications for the clinic room.
