Course overview
CPR is the commonly understood abbreviation for the life saving medical procedure known as Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It was perfected and publicized in 1957 as an effective life-saving mechanism by a team of medical professionals as a way to save those suffering from cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. Nurses and other medical staff are required to have a complete understanding in the purpose, functions, and actions required to accurately and promptly execute this technique in the event of an emergency and to repeat this course to demonstrate effectiveness every few years as required by the state. As a part of the course, the procedure for patients with obstructed airways, the Heimlich Maneuver - is typically taught in addition to these is the correct use of the AED or automatic external defibrillator. This device is put in use when the heart is beating irregularly and the patient requires immediate correction to normal function (American Red Cross 2011).
