Course overview

The course describes the dynamics of IPV across the life span and the impact of IPV on health care and economics. Nurses will learn about appropriate nursing interventions for IPV through the discussion of identification, documentation, and provision of safety. Referral is discussed, including requests for help from emergency services and use of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Medical¿legal concerns for nurses are described, including state laws and mandatory reporting. Nurses will learn about immigration laws and about interacting with a non-English-speaking patient. The course discusses the incidence of teen dating violence, and nurses will learn about screening for and addressing this type of IPV. The course also discusses detecting and addressing IPV in elderly patients. Nurses will learn about dealing with perpetrators, including securing privacy for patient questioning, speaking to the perpetrator, and successful intervention with and treatment of perpetrators.
