Course overview

Over the past decade the World Health Organization (WHO) has been working on the tenth edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding system. Many countries have implemented ICD-10 including Australia, Canada, Thailand, Korea, China and Dubai. In 2008 the United States Department of Health and Human Services proposed the adoption of ICD-10 as the new national coding standard. After several delays the implementation date is set for October 1, 2015. This comprehensive, self-paced, online course provides introduction to the ICD-10-CM coding system. The learning modules will allow participants to gain an understanding about the history, organization, structure and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10. The learner will also be provided with multiple coding examples to better understand code selection for practical application. This will provide participants with the knowledge and proficiency to begin utilizing the ICD-10-CM coding system. The course only reviews the ICD-10-CM (diagnostic) coding. The ICD-10-PCS (procedural) used in hospital inpatient settings for inpatient procedures is not included in this course.
