Course overview

The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to improve their knowledge of important concepts of elder care including: elder abuse, age-related memory changes, chronic conditions, end-of-life issues, and how to provide safe and effective nursing care for elders affected by these issues. Increasing numbers of elders in the United States mean that health care professionals (HCPs) must be prepared to provide safe and appropriate health care for a segment of the population that is rapidly growing. Part of this preparation includes providing care to people with chronic illnesses, memory changes and end-of-life care. This course provides an overview of several of the major issues facing elders in this country. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Differentiate among the different types of elder abuse. 2. Identify risk factors for elder abuse. 3. Describe the reporting process for elder abuse. 4. Describe the assessment process for elder abuse. 5. Explain interventions to deal with elder abuse. 6. Describe age-related memory and cognitive changes. 7. Identify strategies to enhance memory and cognition in older adults. 8. Describe strategies for dealing with behaviors associated with dementia. 9. Describe ways to reduce impact of chronic conditions in the elder population. 10. Identify helpful end-of-life care strategies.
