Course overview

Not all organizations have a formal stroke team or a protocol for activating a stroke alert. However, the need for accurate, swift recognition of impending stroke and appropriate intervention is the same for all organizations. The purpose of this education program is to provide information about the care of stroke patients throughout all levels of the health care continuum. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Provide patients and families with information about stroke rehabilitation programs; 2. Identify the phases of rehabilitation; 3. Explain the process of retraining bowel and bladder functioning; 4. Discuss aspects of mobility training; 5. Explain speech therapy interventions; 6. Discuss emotional and behavioral issues affecting the stroke patient; 7. Discuss sexuality issues after stroke; 8. Discuss pain management after stroke; 9. Identify skin care interventions; 10. Identify important pharmacologic interventions after stroke; 11. Review discharge planning; and 12. Describe critical issues that impact patient care in the community.
