Course overview

This case-based, interactive course will include both an introduction to the history of culturally competent practice in the U.S., as well as a discussion of the changing usage of the terms race, ethnicity and culture since the 1964 Civil Rights Act: the cornerstone of federal law requiring equitable treatment for all, regardless of race, color, religion or national origin ( Civil Rights Act of 1964). Course participants will engage in a case study of a Mexican American woman with asthma, with whom you will interact to better understand barriers to care that can exacerbate health disparities.
