Course overview

Planning and leadership are critical in surviving a disaster event within a hospital setting. Preparing in advance includes coordination with local government and the community as part of a comprehensive, hospital-wide disaster plan called the Emergency Operations Plan, developed from a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis. An available manpower resource audit ensures adequate staffing during and after the event to facilitate a smooth preparation and recovery. Food resources and distribution for employees and staff is a top priority. Emergency menus can help with meal planning, management of food supplies and communication with staff, reducing stress during an emergency event. Agreements with multiple local and non-local vendors for food resources in case of disaster are crucial.
