Course overview

Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and, in some cases, death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 5 and 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu every year, and that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. Because the flu is a contagious respiratory illness, the virus can easily spread throughout schools, offices, healthcare facilities and other places where people gather. This course explains the flu virus and how it spreads. We¿ll also cover influenza symptoms, treatment and prevention, including tips for staying healthy. By the end of this training, you will be able to: -Describe the flu and different types of influenza viruses -Discuss how the flu spreads and how long an infected person is contagious -Recognize flu symptoms and discuss how a diagnosis is made -Outline prevention techniques, including vaccination -Explain treatment options -Summarize how healthcare professionals and long-term care facilities should prepare for and deal with flu season
