Course overview

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “In 2013, stroke caused about 1 of every 20 deaths in the United States. On average, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, and someone dies of stroke approximately every 4 minutes.” Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, as well as a leading cause of disability. Data from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association guidelines for early management of patients with acute ischemic stroke indicate that the public is lacking in knowledge regarding stroke education. By continuing to educate nurses regarding timely and appropriate assessment, treatment guidelines for stroke, and CMS Core Measures for stroke, nurses will be able to better educate and care for these patients in order to achieve best patient outcomes.
