Course overview

Adolescence is a period of growth and discovery as well as rapid physical and psychological changes. As young men and women undergo the physical and psychological changes of adolescence, many experience confusion and dissatisfaction with their bodies. Although the majority of individuals who experience body dissatisfaction eventually accept, if not embrace, their appearance, extreme cases of body dissatisfaction can result in the development of eating disorders. Treatment to address eating disorders is as diverse as the causes for the disease. Clinical teams work to address the physical and psychological aspects of eating disorders. Reducing the incidence of eating disorders through prevention programs is also necessary for the treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. This overview of eating disorders will explore the causes and impacts of the main three eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating among adolescents. The overview will also discuss the most effective treatment approaches to treating eating disorders.
